Dialogue

Interviewer: Good morning and thank you for meeting with me to day Frederick.

Frederick Douglass: It’s my pleasure

Interviewer: Ok let’s get started. So I heard you can read and write is that true, and if so did your masters allow you too?

Frederick Douglass: Well My master’s wife gladly taught me to read and write and soon she started to pick up his habits on how he treated slaves and she became worse than him. I was often very closely watched after that, I wasn’t allowed to have newspaper or a book. Nothing made her happier than catching me reading and getting really mad.

Interviewer: After her changed attitude, how did Mrs. Auld react to seeing you with a book?

Frederick Douglass: She would get really angry and scream at me and force me to clean and do many tasks, she learned that if blacks were educated then they were unmanageable. Mrs Auld didn’t want to lose me so she would punish me.

Interviewer: Wow that sounds horrible. What were some of your punishments?

Frederick Douglass: Some of the punishments I faced was getting whipped I was definitely yelled at alot.

Interviewer: Ok, so what did you do on your free time?

Frederick Douglass: Often times I would go down and the white kids would educate me before they learned that blacks weren’t people, and in return i would give them bread or other foods.

Interviewer: Alright that’s all the questions I have today thank you for your time.

Frederick Douglass: Anytime, bye.
